Product Update: Triple Glazed Insulating Glass Units

Over the past few years we’ve become one of the North of England’s biggest manufacturers of triple glazing, and now have two fully automated lines for their manufacture. One of the key issues to understand with triple glazing however is that unless you have the optimum cavities, gas filling, proper equipment and  correct glass combinations you  may well end up with a unit that has no significant thermal advantage of the DGU equivalent,  yet is just more costly, heavier and prone to failure.

To quantify this, our current standard Planitherm DGU has a centre pane U value of 1.2, so we’ve tailored our triple glazed range to be significantly better than this base unit.  Using just one leaf of Planitherm in a TG unit will at best improve the U value to 1.0 but by simply adding an extra pane of clear glass, the triple glazed equivalent will almost certainly perform worse under a WER scenario.

Our most popular Triple Glazed units therefore use two leaves of Planitherm Total +, with coating on face 3 and 5. Both cavities are argon filled, the middle leaf is always toughened for thermal safety and we are currently in the process of developing a range to include anti condensation – you will probably have had calls from customers complaining about this effect at this time of year?

Using these combinations, our 36mm version offers a centre pane U value of 0.8, and the 44mm version a class leading 0.6.  We can of course tailor a unit to your exact requirements, so if you would like to know more or to discuss price,  I would be happy to come and talk to you further. In the meantime I’ve attached a chart below graphing the various relative performances.

Trouble shooting guide to ‘External Condensation’

We have had a number of enquiries from end consumers, largely due to an increase in ‘A’ rated window installations, about external condensation on the glass. The attached document explains this natural effect in high performing sealed units:

Optimum glass solutions calculated for each Potential customer

Saint Gobain Glass have developed an app downloadable from the AppStore, that takes into account the climate in your area, the Orientation of the elevation, the floor area, size of windows, type of heating, to calculate the most efficient glass for your specific customers individual requirements, and the amount of energy your customer would save if they were to install this glass.

The app allows far more accurate calculations than the conventional window energy rating scheme, by taking into account local climates and elevation orientations rather than a ‘typical average’.

All the products, including Planitherm Total +, Planitherm one, Planitherm 4s, triple glazed, double glazed solutions are readily available from Clayton Glass.

SMARTGLASS: Triple Glazed Conservatory Roof Glass

SMARTGLASS is now available in triple glazed as well as double glazed unit construction. We’ve invested heavily in machinery to allow us to manufacture triple glazed sealed units for windows, whether filled with argon or krypton gas. Combining this investment and glass technologies, we are now able to manufacture and supply triple glazed roof glass, perfect for high specification orangeries. Using two leaves of low e, we achieve a centre pane u-values as low as 0.7, some 30% better than the class leading double glazed roof glass unit, enhanced sound reduction performance, improved solar control and of course still a true self cleaning external coating.

With the introduction of 50% more faces of glass, we are able to utilise more coatings to drive the performance further. The additional middle pane, also introduces the potential to use privacy glass (such as satin) while retaining the self clean and low coatings. Previously something impossible.

For more information, please contact our customer services team on 01207 288200.

Note: Overall cavities start from 24mm (4mm/6mm/4mm/6mm/4mm) Minimum and maximum sizes apply due to the weight of the units, for more details contact one of our customer services team. Technical performance is based on vertical glazing. A full spectrum of colours are available (Blue, Neutral, Bronze and Aqua), the table below gives typical product performance:

Introducing Planitherm One

Clayton Glass is pleased to announce we have recently started stocking SGG Planitherm One. The glass represents the most thermally efficient performance within the Planitherm range. Combining this glass technology alongside our Krypton Gas capabilities in a triple glazed unit, this product can deliver class leading centre pane u-values of 0.7, or 1.0 in a double glazed unit with an argon gas filled cavity.

The product is stocked as a toughenable version, and annealed product is available to order (subject to minimum quantities). For more information on the product and please contact our customer services team on 01207 288200 for more information, or download the full technical brochure here.

U Value table

We have the technology, investment and product range to meet every spectrum of performance required to meet and surpass current legislation.

Clayton Glass offer, and have readily available, sealed units with  krypton or argon gas filled cavities, double or triple glazed, secure by design specifications, acoustic glasses, aluminium  & warm edge spacer bar, low iron and low E glasses.

Launch of Pilkington K glass ‘S’

Pilkington Building Products announced the introduction and development of Pilkington K Glass ‘S’. The new low-e glass has comparable properties to existing soft coat low-e glasses (u-value as low as 1.2), with the added benefit of also being available on low iron glass, and supported by the Pilkington K glass brand – the UK’s most recognisable glass brand to the consumer.

This development is part of a £35 million investment the group is making in their UK manufacturing plant into soft coat manufacturing technologies.

Over the course of the next year the new K glass product range will be featured in a trade and consumer marketing campaign. For technical data, and further information download the Pilkington K Glass S Product Brochure.

As a key strategic supplier, Clayton Glass was one of the first to be invited to the launch of new glass; and of course are pleased to announce we therefore have it available to our customers. Contact Customer Services for more information on 01207 288200.

Planitherm Consumer TV Advertising Campaign

Clayton Glass is one of the larget independent processors in the UK of Planitherm Total + (over 750,000m2 sold so far), which is now the UK’s most popular and best performing energy saving glass. Autumn 2011 Planitherm have launched the second TV advertising campaign. You could benefit from this campaign by registering as a Planitherm Network Installer, log on to www.planitherm-network.com. Triple Glazing

A hot topic at the moment. We have full capabilities to produce triple glazed units, argon, air or krypton filled. A point to note – the middle pane is advised to be toughened regardless of the outer pane, requirement – this is to ensure thermal stability. Contact customer services for more details on triple glazing.
